Aphibarnrat overcomes wobble to take play-off win

Kiradech Aphibarnrat took glory in the Shenzen International after an exciting conclusion to Sunday's play saw him prevail in a play-off with Li Hao-tong.

Thailand's Aphibarnrat came into the final round as the overnight leader, two shots clear of his nearest competitor.

However, he toiled badly throughout much of Sunday, as four bogeys and two birdies saw him drop back to 10 under with two holes to play.

By that point, Li - bidding to become the first Chinese player to win on home soil on the European Tour - was back in the clubhouse on 12 under, watching Aphibarnrat's progress on a television screen.

He must have thought he was well placed to lift the trophy until, at the 17th, Aphibarnrat sensationally sank a 15-foot putt for eagle, bringing him level with Li at the top of the leaderboard.

The Thai had a chance to claim victory in regulation play at the 18th, but a putt from a similar distance drifted just right of the cup, meaning he and Li would go down the final hole again in a play-off.

Li's second shot on the par-four left him on the green but a long way from the hole, whereas Aphibarnrat struck his to within 12 feet.

Faced with a monster putt, Li sent his effort past the hole, giving his rival the chance to seal his second Tour victory, after winning the Malaysia Open in March 2013.

And Aphibarnrat made no mistake, sinking his putt for a birdie three before roaring his delight in a passionate celebration.
