Allenby: Homeless lady saved my life

Australian golfer Robert Allenby claimed he only survived being mugged and bashed in Hawaii because of a homeless woman and a military man.

Allenby claimed a homeless woman "pretty much saved" him from being bashed to death after he was dumped in a sidestreet in Waikiki, while the military man paid for a taxi to get him back to his hotel.

According to the 43-year-old, he was knocked unconscious after leaving the wine bar Amuse on Friday, put in the boot of a car, robbed and then thrown out in a side street.

As he lay there, two homeless men began to kick him before a homeless woman scared them away.

"I was very fortunate," Allenby told Australian TV show Sunrise on Monday.

"I mean, a homeless lady pretty much saved my life."

Allenby added: "When this guy came from the military [arrived] I just, I was like crying, and obviously beaten up, blood's just going everywhere, and I just said to him 'I just want to go back to my hotel and get the police and ambulances there, I just need to be somewhere safe'."

The four-time winner on the PGA Tour was in Hawaii for the Sony Open but had missed the cut, so was out with a friend and his caddie.

But Allenby was alone when he left the bar, as his "buddy" did not realise he had gone to the toilet after paying the bill.

"My buddy got distracted and I went to the bathroom, and when I came out of the bathroom some people had said that my buddy had already left," he said.

Allenby insisted, however, that he had not taken any unnecessary risks.

"I think if you're a professional athlete or any type of celebrity status I think you always have to be careful," he said.

"I always try to stay to really nice establishments. I don't go out drinking and party and stuff, I don't go to nightclubs. I try and stick to the...classy areas because I feel like you've always got to be careful."
