MORE: McIlroy dismisses Scott rivalry

Scott led by a shot on the 18th tee last year but bogeyed the final hole to open the door for Rory McIlroy who made a closing birdie to steal victory.

The defeat denied the Queenslander the Stonehaven Cup as well as the coveted Triple Crown.

"I certainly have a thorn in my side after not winning last year," Scott said on Wednesday.

"I did everything but win, I felt like when it came down to it but on the day Rory played a great Sunday last year.

"I had my chances, even late in the piece I had my chances to kind of close the door but I left it open and you can't do that with the best players in the world."

Scott has dropped from number two to third on the official rankings but enters his national open in good touch and expects the Australian Golf Club layout to suit the longer hitters this week.

He finished 12th at the HSBC Champions tournament in China and in a three-way tie for second at last week's Australian Masters in Melbourne.

"I've had good preparation I think coming in the last few weeks from playing in China to getting up into contention late on Sunday last week and getting close," he said.

"I think my game's shaping up nicely, so I'm very comfortable with where it's at but of course there's a lot of shots and challenges before Sunday afternoon and even thinking about winning this week.

"My goal will be just like any other tournament, just to kind of work my way into a great place so I've got a chance on Sunday."

Scott will trial his third caddie in recent weeks with the experienced Mike Kerr of Zimbabwe on the bag this week.

He ended his successful partnership with Steve Williams in September after the fiery New Zealand bagman announced he no longer wanted to caddie full-time.

Kerr is on loan from Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and has previously worked for Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jiminez and Ernie Els.

The 2013 US Masters champ says he's in no hurry to settle on his new man and admits Williams is irreplaceable.

"I've got a bit of time up my sleeve to not have to jump out there and make a decision and put someone on straight away and think it might be the wrong decision or have to chop and change," he said.

"I'm just trying to buy myself a little time to see exactly what I want because obviously Steve is such a strong character and unique caddie.

"I'm not looking to replace him; I think that would be the wrong way to go about it.

"A big thing in finding a new caddy is going to be the personality and how that gels, certainly with me but the rest of the people around me as well and how we work as a team, and that's going to be important."
