Tiger revival turns to Boston

Tiger revival turns to Boston

09/01/2010 02:12:17 AM

All eyes will be on a resurgent Tiger Woods as the FedEx Cup continues with the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston on Thursday.

American Matt Kuchar claimed the first FedEx Cup playoff event at The Barclays on Sunday, while world No.1 Woods continued his gradual return to form by finishing in a tie for 12th at seven-under par.

Woods, recovering from some of the worst performances of his professional career, has displayed glimpses of his past form at the USPGA Championship and The Barclays in recent weeks.

The FedEx Cup field was shortened to the top 100 players in the point standings after the Barclays and will be reduced again to 75 for the BMW Championship.

Woods, currently 65th, will need to finish approximately T54 or better in order to extend his defence of the FedEx Cup.

Woods has never finished outside the top 11 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, winning once and finishing runner-up twice, giving the fourteen-time major winner cause for optimism.

"The next three events, the next three venues I've won on," Woods said.

"So I'm going to three venues I'm very familiar with and looking forward to it."

2009 champion Steve Stricker is the only man on tour never to miss a FedEx Cup playoff round and will begin the defence of his trophy on form after finishing third at the Barclays.

"To defend the Deutsche Bank, it will be a lot of fun,'' Stricker said.

"It's a great tournament. I love coming there. The field is outstanding, the condition of the course has always been top-notch and the area and the people, the way they treat you, is second to none."

Justin Rose, currently fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, will have more reason than many to excel in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The Englishman failed to accumulate enough points on the European Tour to qualify for the Ryder Cup and was overlooked for a captain's pick despite his excellent form in the US.

The snub was perceived by many as punishment for a lack of appearances in Europe, with Paul Casey also excluded.

Other big names tipped to be in contention include Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott and Barclays winner Kuchar.

The Deutche Bank Championship begins at the Tournament Players Course in Norton, Massachusetts on Thursday September 1.
