Australian duo Adam Scott and Greg Chalmers are just five shots from the lead at the midway point of the Northern Trust Open in California.

The pair finished the second round of the tournament in a tie for 13th place at four-under overall, to trail the joint leaders by five strokes.

Swede Fredrik Jacobson and Korea's Sang-Moon Bae are tied for the top at minus nine, but Scott and Chalmers are close enough to make a move on the weekend with two rounds remaining.

Scott fired an impressive round of 67 to move into contention, while the consistent Chalmers shot a second consecutive 69 to stay in touch with the leaders.

It is a congested leaderboard near the top, with world number three Luke Donald within two shots of the lead at seven under, while Englishman Lee Westwood and South African Charl Schwartzel are another shot back at minus five.

Two other Australians will feature over the weekend, with Stuart Appleby carding a 69 to be level par overall and Marc Leishman sneaking in at the cut line at two over after a poor 75
