Rock upstages McIlroy, Woods in Abu Dhabi

01/29/2012 07:26:34 PM

Robert Rock held off Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods on Sunday to pull off a sensational win at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships.

Englishman Rock, 34, survived a late scare going into the 18th hole with a two-stroke lead to win just his second tournament from 226 European Tour events.

The world number 117 found trouble on the last when he pushed his drive into a hazard on the right and took a penalty, but recovered to make the required double bogey and edge US Open champion McIlroy by a single stroke.

Rock posted a two-under 70 to finish 13-under overall at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, with Northern Irishman McIlroy 12 under.

Joint overnight leader Woods could not replicate the strong showing of his first three rounds and the American needed to produce an eagle on the last, even with Rock's double-bogey, to have forced a playoff.

McIlroy birdied the last hole for a three-under 69, finishing runner-up for the second year in a row, while Woods, Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell and Dane Thomas Bjorn finished two behind the leader.

Woods started well with consecutive birdies on the second and third, and looked like he might pull away from Rock.

However, successive bogeys on the fourth and fifth, coupled with a string of errant drives, saw the 14-time major champion scrambling just to card an even-par 72.

A disappointed Woods drew positives from the tournament but lamented his inability to consolidate after a good start to his final round.

"I was hitting the ball a little bit further than I thought I would ... so something to look at, and something to try and figure out," Woods said.

"I hit the ball good enough to win the golf tournament this week."

"Today I just didn't give myself enough looks at it. It was a day I was just a touch off off the tee and consequently I couldn't get the ball close enough to give myself looks."
