Mickelson wins at Pebble Beach

Mickelson wins at Pebble Beach

Phil Mickelson captured the 48th victory of his career and first of 2012 on Sunday, winning the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am by two shots.

The world number 17, a four-time major champion, carded the lowest round of the day by some distance at Pebble Beach Golf Links, with an eight-under-par 64 taking him to 17-under overall.

It was good enough for him to win the PGA Tour event by two strokes in California, ahead of South Korean Charlie Wi, who had held a three-shot lead following Saturday's penultimate round.

Wi could only manage an even-par 72 for his final 18 holes, and struggled to recover from a double-bogey six at the first.

American Ricky Barnes posted a five-under 67 to finish outright third at 13-under, while Aaron Baddeley of Australia matched Barnes' final-round efforts to claim fourth place, one stroke further back.

Former world number one Tiger Woods was third after three rounds and appeared in ominous form going into the decider.

But he slumped to a three-over 75, finishing the tournament in a share of 15th at seven-under.

It would have taken the best efforts of Woods or any other player to halt Mickelson's charge, and there proved to be no stopping the 41-year-old left-hander.

Mickelson made a strong start with three birdies and an eagle three over his first six holes on Sunday.

He sunk three more birdies on the back nine, and went bogey-free throughout the day, with 11 solid pars enough to see him collect the US$1.1 million prize for first place.

Americans Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson were tied for fifth at 11-under.

Ken Duke, in second spot overnight, turned in a two-over-par 74, and was forced to settle for tied seventh alongside Ireland's Padraig Harrington.
