Lamely wins in Puerto Rico

Derek Lamely got the better of testing conditions as he powered to a convincing victory at the rain-affected Puerto Rico Open.
The American took his first win on the PGA Tour by two strokes after shooting a bogey-free six-under-par 66 at the Trump International Golf Club, which was the scent of heavy rain on Thursday and Friday before poor light delayed the third round on Sunday evening.
Lamely moved into contention when the third round finally got under way with a course-record 63 before tying for the best round on Monday as he claimed the win on 19-under as his rivals faded.
Fellow American Kris Blanks hit a final-round 69 as he finished at 17-under in second place.
Overnight leader Steve Wheatcroft failed to maintain his place at the head of the pack as he signed for a 70 to finish joint third on 16-under alongside Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge, James Nitties of Australia and fellow American Kevin Streelman.
Heavy rain and wind had forced organisers to extend the tournament to a fifth day, which Lamely began from the 10th hole. He finished his final round over two hours ahead of his nearest challengers, but his agonising wait was made worthwhile as no-one came close to usurping him at the summit.
"I just kept on trying to make birdies, I kept on trying to be aggressive," said Lamely, who split his six birdies equally between the front and back nine in a near faultless display.
"I'm still a rookie out here, even though I just won. There's tons I can learn still."
"I knew if I kept playing well and I kept trying to make birdies, I knew I would get within striking distance."
