Kuchar edges Laird at Barclays

Kuchar edges Laird at Barclays

08/29/2010 10:34:53 PM

American Matt Kuchar needed a thrilling playoff to defeat Martin Laird to win the US PGA Tour's Barclays event in New Jersey.

Kuchar's five-under par 66 was the second best round of the day as he hauled in day-three leader Laird with late birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.

Australian Jason Day birdied the last hole to finish in a four-way tie for fifth place at 9-under, while Adam Scott finished one stroke further back to finish in the top 10.

Laird, who shot an even-par round of 71, was still in front before he bogeyed the final hole to force the event to a playoff.

The Scotsman was unable to overcome the disappointment of his last hole slip-up and found the rough from the tee on the playoff hole but, fortunately for Laird, so did Kuchar.

The American was able to recover, however, hitting a sensational shot onto the green with his second.

Laird two-putted for par before Kuchar sunk his two-foot birdie to clinch the biggest win of his career.

US duo Steve Stricker and Kevin Streelman finished two shots off the pace at 10 under.

The duo was one shot ahead of South African Rory Sabbatini who lit up the course on day four by scoring a seven-under par 64.

Tiger Woods finished tied in 12th after posting an impressive four-under 67 on the final day.

Woods led the field after the opening round but two disappointing days on the green followed before the 34-year-old impressed with his putter on Sunday, much to his pleasure.

"I hit the ball a lot better and finally today I made some putts. Only difference today is that I made some putts," he said.

"(I'm) going to keep going with it and be committed to what I'm doing on every shot."

Englishman Luke Donald looked like mounting a dramatic come-from-behind challenge after he hit seven birdies in the first nine holes.

Donald moved from three-under par to 10 under before he learnt of his Ryder Cup selection for Europe.

After that, Donald struggled and scored five bogeys on the back nine.

"I certainly could have won, that was a great start, I was in the zone. Everything was going right, and then the back nine wasn't so hot. I went out in 28, then I found out I was in the Ryder Cup team and I didn't have to try," Donald joked.

The Barclays was the first in four FedEx Cup playoff events with Kuchar topping the standings after his impressive win.
