Jimenez hits masterful round

Jimenez hits masterful round

09/04/2010 03:26:31 AM

Miguel Angel Jimenez hit a career best 10-under-par round of 61 to take a three-shot lead after day two at the European Masters.

The 46-year-old carded two eagles and six birdies en route to the best round of his 27-year European Tour career at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland.

The Spaniard tops the leaderboard ahead of two Italian players, Ryder Cup newcomer Edoardo Molinari and 17-year-old prodigy Matteo Mannassero, both tied for second on 11 under.

Finland's Mikko Ilonen is fourth on ten under, with Englishman Graeme Storm a shot further back.

First round leader Mannassero followed up his opening round of 64 with a four-under-par 67 to stay in contention, while Johnnie Walker Classic winner Molinari is impressing again at Crans-Montana.

"I hit the ball great and it was a very controlled and solid round," Molinari said.

The 29-year-old will make his Ryder Cup bow in October after playing his way into the team with two tournament wins this season.

But it was one of the elder statesmen of the European team, Jimenez, who stole the show in the Swiss Alps in round two.

"It was a beautiful day in the mountains," said Jimenez.

"I was thinking 59 a little bit and I tried, but it was still a great round. All the clubs were working properly and that's what you need."
