Whether you decide to start three, four or five midfielders, it's important to get your team balance right.

Depending on how many "locks' you have selected in the striking positions, you need to craft your midfield picks to leave enough cash to pick a sturdy defence and goalkeeper.

Midfielders accumulate seven points for a goal (one more point than a striker) and also get a point for recording a clean sheet.

Your selections should be based on the goal and assist threat that each midfielder possesses - with an eye for a bargain.

Each midfielder can be classified in one of four categories - locks, risks, cash cows and avoids.

Locks

Eden Hazard (Chelsea) - £11.54m

Scored 14 goals and had 10 assists in a breakthrough campaign for the Blues. Experts believe Hazard has further improvement left meaning he is a must for any Fantasy team. Also takes penalties.

Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) - £11.50m

Had a brilliant first Premier League season with Arsenal scoring 16 goals and picking up nine assists. Looks to be the Gunners' main man again and can be relied on for a significant output

Raheem Sterling (Man City) - £10.15m

Finally got his move away from Liverpool and has looked lively in pre-season for new club Manchester City. Will provide something different for City and could form a lethal partnership with Sergio Aguero.

Risks

David Silva (Man City) - £10.76m

There is no doubting David Silva's ability but he is injury-prone and tends to go missing in the second half of the season.

Yaya Toure (Man City) - £10.15m

Relies on a decent portion of his goals from the penalty spot. There are better options that play further forward with more goal threat.

Memphis Depay (Man Utd) - £9.23m

Seems to have all the tools to make it in the Premier League but often players take a while to settle. Should provide a goal threat based on his numbers last season but they were in the weak Dutch Eredivisie.

Who will you take a risk on in your Sportal EPL Fantasy team?

Cash Cows

James Milner (Liverpool) - £8.56m

Always provided a goal threat for Manchester City but will now get opportunites at Liverpool with a starting berth his to lose. Can expect a return on investment with a more important role at Anfield.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal) - £8.02m

A slightly risky pick because of his injury concerns and competition for position but Walcott has the ability to bang the goals in - as shown by his form at the end of last season.

Dimitri Payet (West Ham) - £7.84m

Comes to West Ham from French side Marseille with great wraps. Scored seven goals with a whopping 21 assists in Ligue 1 last season. Could be a value for money pickup.

Avoids

Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) - £6.04m

May be poised for a breakout season but faces stiff competition in both advanced and defensive midfield roles. Will not be a reliable option.

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool) - £8.65m

Has increased competition for position with the signings of Roberto Firmino and Milner. Did hit his straps toward the end of last season but does not provide a safe enough midfield option with his projected output.

Samir Nasri (Man City) - £7.48m

Will be competing with Sterling for a starting spot with the former Liverpool man likely to be favoured. Nasri has endured a steady decline over the past couple of seasons and is likely to not be what your team needs.
