Wenger rues slip-up

Manager Arsene Wenger says Arsenal only have themselves to blame after the 1-1 draw at home with Wolves on Tuesday.

An early goal from Gervinho gave the Gunners the lead and put them on track to leap-frog London rivals Chelsea into fourth on the English Premier League table, until Steven Fletcher equalised with a header in the first half.

The Gunners laid a siege on Wayne Hennessey's goal, but the Wolves shot-stopper stood tall as his side held on for a point, despite a red card for Nenad Milijas with 15 minutes to go.

"We missed a great opportunity, but we have to keep going and take the positives out of the performance," Wenger told reporters.

"What we have to learn is that when we are at 1-0 up, I believe that in some departments we become a bit too comfortable."

"We were caught at 1-1 in a position where we can only blame ourselves for the rest. Their keeper had the game of his life. They fought like mad and well done to them."

"I don't know how many shots they had on goal or how many we had, but it's the kind of game you play 20 times, and you win 19 times and draw one. That was today, on the day where we couldn't afford it."

"It is frustrating, but I'm more frustrated by the result than the performance and the spirit. I cannot fault the attitude or the commitment or the desire to win the game."

Wenger also insisted that decisions have not been falling his team's way of late, after they were denied a penalty when Laurent Koscielny's cross appeared to strike the arm of Christophe Berra.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy hailed Hennessey's performance, describing him as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League after his display.

McCarthy also expressed his pride at his men's efforts on Tuesday, but reserved special praise for his 24-year-old goalkeeper.

"(I am) delighted and proud," McCarthy told reporters.

"It's a difficult old place to come and play, isn't it?"

"I think Wayne (Hennessey) is one of the best goalkeepers in the league, personally. He gets a bit to do at times, playing behind us. But we can rely on him and trust him. He put in a great performance today."

While full of praise for his goalkeeper, however, McCarthy had criticism for Stuart Atwell's decision to hand Miljias a red card for his challenge on Mikel Arteta: "What do you lot in here think of the sending off before I give my answer? Not while I've got a hole in my bum (was it a red card). I will go and ask Stuart," he said.

"I think that rarefied atmosphere (at the Emirates) is a difficult place to work whether you're a player, a coach, a manager, a referee or assistant … it's pretty pressurised out there and I think there was a lot of pressure to him to do it."
