Webber: I won't be punching Vettel

Mark Webber has declared he won't miss Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel after his retirement from Formula 1 but said punching the three-time world champion was not on his agenda.

Webber and Vettel have endured a fractious relationship over the years due to a series of incidents, the nadir of which came during last March's Malaysian Grand Prix when the German driver ignored team orders to turn down his engine and proceeded to over-take Webber and claim victory.

With Webber seemingly destined to play a secondary role to Vettel at Red Bull, the Australian driver has opted to call time on his Formula 1 career, although the 36-year-old will remain in motorsport as he joins Porsche for the manufacturer's return to Le Mans-style racing.

But when asked on BBC television show Top Gear whether he would miss Vettel, the answer was a defiant 'no' from Webber, in a move that may inflame tensions further in the team during the second half of the F1 season.

"Will I miss Seb ... ahhh probably not a huge amount, no," declared Webber in an episode that is yet to air in Australia.

"In a competitive environment, I think there's always going to be a bit of needle. There's a lot of history between us two that's gone before."

When asked specifically by host Jeremy Clarkson whether he would consider punching Vettel, Webber added a further shot.

"A lot of people (in the audience) are saying yes and I'm really concerned," he said before adding: "I think my Dad's always said you shouldn't hit boys mate, so ...."

Webber also opened up a little on his decision to quit Formula 1.

"Timing's right for me," he said. "A bit of a break from what I've been doing for the last 14 years.

"So I'm going to race with Porsche actually, I know you love Porsches," he said to Clarkson.

Although Webber hasn't managed to beat Vettel too many times, he did emerge victorious in a small battle on Top Gear.

Racing in the program's 'Reasonably Priced Car' segment, Webber drove his Suzuki Liana around the Top Gear test circuit in a time of one minute and 43.1 seconds.

His effort was good enough to beat out Vettel, who posted a time of 1:44.00 but not quite as good as British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who set the fastest time on the show with 1:42.9.
