In a bizarre incident, Blues striker Diego Costa was ruled to have fouled Gareth McAuley and in the ensuing player scrum afterwards, Fabregas drilled the ball from long range into Brunt's red.
Referee Mike Jones strode over to Fabregas and pulled out the red ticket.
