Cahill facing contract termination

The 35-year-old striker has scored only one goal - from the penalty spot - in 13 games for the Chinese Super League side after signing a one-year $AUD5 million deal.

Shanghai want Cahill's contract terminated or a loan move arranged so a new foreign player can be signed, according to an agent acting for the club.

“Unfortunately, the club is not doing well and with one goal this season, Tim Cahill has not been able to produce what the club was looking for from him,” the agent told The World Game.

“His form has been quite patchy and the club now wants to either loan him or perhaps even come to a mutual contract termination.”

Cahill acknowledged his struggles in China in the aftermath of the Socceroos 2-1 win over Kyrgyzstan but was optimistic the goals will come because of his work ethic.

"I'm not going to say I've hit the ground running but I'm not going to say I haven't put in a shift," Cahill said.

"My job is to be a professional and my job is to smash everything to do with football. I've played 13 or 14 games and my stats have been amazing.

"I've played every single game, I've not missed a training session and I focus on myself.

"(The goals) will come, I think, but it all depends on how we play and the style."

It is understood the former Everton star is in talks with other CSL clubs but news of Cahill's availability has also put Australian A-League clubs on high alert.
