The Melbourne Age reports director Mark Grentell and Peter Cox will team up to write a script about the story of how Australia’s part-timers defied the odds and made it to the West Germany for the 1974 World Cup.

The '74 Socceroo team, coached by Rale Rasic, became Australia's first ever senior men’s national team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.

Grentell and Cox – who came up with the cricket comedy movie Backyard Ashes – will work with producer Anne Robinson who will try to secure interest in “74”,  the working title of the movie, at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

‘‘It’s a great story filled with wonderful larrikin characters and the ultimate Australian under-dog sports story,’’ Grentell told the newspaper.

Grentell is also reported to be developing a comedy about a football coach who recruits asylum seekers.
