Napoli stole three points in a 1-0 win over Palermo in the Serie A on Tuesday, after Christian Maggio struck an injury-time winner.

Napoli surged forward as extra time wound down at the Stadio San Paolo, with Slovakia international Marek Hamsik taking possession and playing a through ball into the box for Edison Cavani.

Cavani narrowly beat the offside call and drew Palermo goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu to him on the left, before poking a pass across the face of goal to Maggio.

The Italy winger mistimed his slide but managed to get enough of the ball to score from inside the six-yard box.

There was just time enough for play to restart before referee Emidio Morganti blew the final whistle, capping a disappointing night for Palermo.

Delio Rossi's men were largely ineffective away from home, recording just one shot on target and earning two corners to Napoli's 16.

They drop to seventh on the Serie A table with 23 points, behind Inter Milan and Sampdoria on goal difference.

Napoli consolidate fourth place with 27 points, level with Juventus in third.
