Rookie Ryan gains confidence

Rookie goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will be keen to continue his outstanding run between the sticks when the Mariners host North Queensland at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Saturday night.

Ryan, 18, was thrown in the deep end when Mariners goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan suffered a season-ending knee injury on the eve of Round 4.

But after a shaky start against Sydney, Ryan has been in brilliant form for the Mariners.

He has not had to pick the ball out of the back of the net in the past three games.

Ryan's form in goals and a strong defence led by captain Alex Wilkinson and veteran Patrick Zwaanswijk have been key features of the club's impressive start.

"Things couldn't be any better for me,'' Ryan said.

"I'm getting more confident every week.''

Ryan's rise to the A-League has been amazing. Six months ago the teenager's mission was to make his NSW Premier League first grade debut for Blacktown.

He achieved that and is now holding down a regular spot in the A-League.

Ryan got his chance after Danny Vukovic left the club and Vanstrattan's injury.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold signed veteran Paul Henderson as cover but has stuck with Ryan.

"My goal is to make the position mine,'' Ryan said.

"That's what Arnie wants me to do. He had faith in me which is great for my confidence.''

Meanwhile, midfielder Oliver Bozanic will go straight back into the starting line-up for Saturday night's match after returning from Olyroo duty.
