Real Madrid put on a clinical display to thrash Deportivo La Coruna 6-1 as Jose Mourinho's side moved to third on the La Liga table on Sunday.

The Bernabeu crowd were treated to a goal feast, which was started by playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo in the fourth minute, before German rising star Mesut Ozil doubled their advantage 20 minutes later.

Angel Di Maria joined in the scoring action in the 34th minute, before Gonzalo Higuain, the provider of both Ozil's and Di Maria's goals, added his name to the scoresheet eight minutes after the break.

A Ze Castro own goal in the 60th minute and a late Ronaldo strike made it six for the hosts, while Juan Rodriguez pulled one back for Deportivo in the 78th minute.

Sevilla gave new manager Gregorio Manzano something to smile about with his first home win in charge of the side, beating Atletico Madrid 3-1.

Avaro Negredo scored first for the hosts, netting his third for the season, after some fine lead-up play from Diego Perotti in the 29th minute, before Perotti himself got on the scoresheet six minutes later.

Forward Frederic Kanoute added another seven minutes after the break to all but seal the points, before Diego Da Silva Costa scored a consolation goal for Atletico in the 58th minute.

Barcelona were held to a surprise 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp by Mallorca on Sunday.

Argentine marvel Lionel Messi scored first in the 21st minute in his return from injury, but his goal was cancelled out three minutes before half-time with an effort from forward Emilio Nsue.

Villareal cemented second spot on the La Liga table with a convincing 2-0 win over Racing Santander.

Valencia's win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday meant Villareal could not claim top spot with victory at El Madrigal, but early goals to Nilmar in the eighth minute and Giuseppe Rossi five minutes later were enough to get them the three points.

Rossi's shot on target created the first goal, as Racing's goalkeeper Tono saved the attempt, before Nilmar smashed in the rebound.

Santi Cazorla was the provider of the second goal, with his pass finding Rossi who cleverly chipped Tono to double their lead.

Getafe comfortably racked up win number three for the season, beating Hercules 3-0 at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Spanish midfielder Daniel Parejo opened the scoring on 21 minutes, before forward Manu made it two just before half-time as the hosts took control.

Getafe striker Miku took just three minutes to find the scoresheet when he was substituted on for Adrian Colunga, scoring his side's third in the 82nd minute.

Hercules midfielder Abel Aguilar was shown a red card in the 89th minute, capping a horrendous result for the promoted side.

Levante escaped from Estadio El Sadar with a point as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Osasuna.

The hosts earned a much-deserved lead in the 72nd minute, when forward Walter Pandiani's low strike found the bottom left corner of the net.

But Levante hit back seven minutes later when Sergio's long-range strike beat Osasuna's Ricardo to give them a share of the spoils.

Almeria's Kalu Uche equalised to gain his side a point against Malaga, but it will be his missed penalty 12 minutes prior that the hosts will rue, as they have just one win from their opening six matches.

The fixture at Juegos Mediterraneos saw Malaga's Eliseu sent off in the 41st minute, but Almeria could not make the most of their numerical advantage on the pitch.
