Real Madrid shot clear at the top of Group G after beating AC Milan 2-0 in a dominant performance in the Champions League on Wednesday.

First-half goals from Mesut Oezil and Cristiano Ronaldo ensured the Spanish giants maintained their perfect record in Europe this season and opened up a five-point gap at the top of the group.

Both teams went into the match at the Bernabeu undefeated in the Champions League this season, but it was Jose Mourinho's side who got off to a flying start.

Ronaldo was at his best, probing the Milan full backs with trademark runs and trickery.

But it was from a set piece where the Portuguese star made his mark, splitting the Milan wall and finding the net after 12 minutes following Pato's foul on Xabi Alonso.

Just a minute later it was 2-0 as Ronaldo again found space down the left before squaring the ball to Oezil, whose deflected shot sent Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia the wrong way.

Milan's much-vaunted strikeforce of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho and Pato struggled to have any impact on the game as Ronaldo continued to dominate, but in the end Madrid had to settle for a 2-0 win which leaves them five points clear of Milan and Ajax.

The Dutch side drew level with the Italians in the Group G standings after they beat French side Auxerre 2-1.

Dutch international Demy de Zeeuw gave Ajax the lead after just seven minutes when he launched a powerful strike from the edge of the area which gave Auxerre goalkeeper Olivier Sorin no chance.

A slick passing move then saw Mounir el Hamdaoui set up Uruguayan Luis Suarez for Ajax's second four minutes before the break, but a goal to Valter Birsa on 52 minutes ensured Auxerre kept the pressure on the home side in the second half.

Real Madrid lead Group G on nine points, Milan and Ajax are both on four, while Auxerre sits bottom without a point from three matches.

Arsenal continued their dominance of Group H with a 5-1 demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Arsene Wenger's side have now scored 14 goals in their opening three Champions League fixtures and have one foot in the last 16 after crushing the previously undefeated Shakhtar at the Emirates Stadium.

Captain Cesc Fabregas scored a second-half penalty on his return from injury while Alex Song, Samir Nasri, Jack Wilshere and Marouane Chamakh also netted to leave Arsenal with a perfect nine points from three games.

The victory was never really in any doubt from the moment Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov made a terrible mess of a first-half corner, allowing Johan Djourou to set up Song to scramble the ball home from close range in the 19th minute.

Nasri fired home a second soon after, before Fabregas struck from the spot and Wilshere finished off a slick passing move with Tomas Rosicky to give Arsenal an unassailable lead.

Chamakh made it five after some lacklustre defending from the visitors allowed him a simple finish past Pyatov.

Former Gunner Eduardo made an emotional return to the Emirates after his injury-plagued stint in north London, and the Croatian international received a standing ovation from the Arsenal faithful when he scored a late consolation for the visitors.

Elsewhere in Group H, Portuguese side Braga kept their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive with a 2-0 home victory against Partizan Belgrade.

Brazilan forward Lima scored a superb free kick 10 minutes before half time to give the hosts the lead after what had been an uninspiring start.

Partizan began to press forward as the second half wore on, but failed to create many clear-cut chances.

Braga hit them on the counter attack in the final minute with Matheus finishing from close range to seal the three points.

In Group E, German champions Bayern Munich are six points clear at the top after beating CFR Cluj 3-2.

But the Romanian champions may have pulled off an upset result at the Allianz Arena in Munich had it not been for a pair of own goals in the first half.

German international Mario Gomez was the only Bayern player to get on the scoresheet, with Cluj defenders Cadu and Cristian Panin putting the ball into their own net within six minutes of each other shortly after the half-hour.

The own goals marred an otherwise impressive first half for Cluj, who went ahead on 28 minutes through Cadu.

Gomez's close-range strike on 77 minutes gave Bayern a 3-1 lead, before Emmanuel Culio restored some hope for Cluj when he scored from 12 yards in the 86th minute. But it was not to be for the Romanians, who fell to a second successive loss and sit third on the Group E table.

Meanwhile, Swiss club Basel improved to second on the table after ending a two-game Champions League losing streak with a 3-1 victory at Italian club Roma.

Alexander Frei put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute at the Stadio Olimpico, thumping a punishing low ball from the edge of the area after Marco Streller headed back into space.

Marco Borriello equalised for the Italians 10 minutes later, but Samuel Inkoom restored Basel's advantage on the stroke of half time.

Roma pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half but left themselves vulnerable to a counter-attack, an opportunity that was eventually exploited by Basel substitute Cabral in the fourth minute of injury time.

Roma fall to the foot of the Group E table on goal difference after the loss, with Basel, Cluj and the Italians now six points adrift of Bayern who sit on nine points.

Meanwhile Chelsea maintained their perfect start in Champions League Group F with a 2-0 win over Spartak Moscow.

Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium was the site of Chelsea's devastating Champions League final loss to Manchester United in 2008, but the Premier League champions put that defeat behind them in their return to the arena thanks to first-half goals from Yuri Zhirkov and Nicolas Anelka.

Zhirkov made a successful return to the Russian capital, where he spent five seasons with CSKA Moscow, scoring the opening goal with a spectacular volley in the 23rd minute.

Nicholas Anelka made it 2-0 just before half time when he latched onto a precise through ball from Michael Essien and drilled a low right-foot shot past Dykan.

Chelsea top the group with nine points while Moscow stay second with six ahead of their return trip to Stamford Bridge in a fortnight.

In Group F's other match, Marseille earned their first points of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Slovakian champions Zilina in France.

Following a goalless first half at the Stade Velodrome, Senegalese defender Souleymane Diawara rose highest to nod home Luis Gonzalez's corner two minutes after the interval.
