PSV make Twente pay

PSV made the most of FC Twente's slip-up to break two points clear on top of the Eredivisie table, thanks to a win over Excelsior on Sunday.

With Twente beaten in their trip to NAC Breda in the day's later game, PSV would have been delighted to have toppled a plucky Excelsior 4-2 a few hours earlier in Eindhoven.

While defender Daan Bovenberg put the away side in front after just six minutes, 22-year-old Netherlands striker Jeremain Lens had restored status quo by the 19 minute mark and veteran right-back Wilfred Bouma had handed PSV the lead 10 minutes out from the half-time whistle.

Highly rated Finland forward Ola Toivonen made it 3-1 for Fred Rutten's men on 50 minutes, though Guyon Fernandez handed Excelsior a lifeline with his 70th-minute strike.

A late goal to Brazilian defender Marcelo, however, iced the three points for PSV.

The win was made all the sweeter with Twente's 2-1 loss at NAC Breda, despite the reigning champions taking the lead on 22 minutes through prolific striker Bryan Ruiz.

But two goals in nine minutes late in the second half - to strike duo Ali Boussaboun and Matthew Amoah - shocked Twente into their first loss of the season and relegated them to second on the table.

Roda JC's hosting of FC Utrecht was postponed.
