Thompson’s future at the Hyundai A-League champions is still up in the air, with the 36-year-old still unsigned for the 2015/16 campaign.

The ex-Socceroos attacker is desperate to stay with Victory but hasn’t ruled out playing elsewhere if he can’t work out a new deal.

But in an interview with Fox Sports News on Friday, Muscat revealed Thompson was still very much in his plans for next season.

“I’d love Archie to be at the club next season,” Muscat told Fox Sports News.

“I think that gives you an indication of what I want to happen. But there are conversations going on with four or five players at the moment.

“With respect to them and their management I don’t want to go into too much detail. Yes, I want Archie at the football club next year.”

Muscat knows all about Thompson’s quality and influence around the club, having been a part of Victory’s inaugural side back in 2005/06.

He says Thompson’s contribution to Victory and the entire Hyundai A-League over the last 10 years can’t be understated.

“His contribution over a decade is unprecedented in our code in this country or in fact in any code,” Muscat said.

“What we have to do is take stock - I’ve made it clear to Archie I want him at the football club next season

“Removing all emotion from making the decision, both parties will come to a conclusion and the right decision will be made.”
