Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat has confirmed he will retire at the end of this year's Asian Champions League.

It means the 37-year-old's final A-League match was the infamous clash against Melbourne Heart, where he was sent off and subsequently handed an eight-match ban for a shocking tackle on Adrian Zahra.

An inaugural member of the Victory, Muscat finishes his career with 122 matches in the A-League.

He also represented the Socceroos 51 times over 12 years and enjoyed stints in England and Scotland throughout his career.

Muscat, who has already been sharing his playing duties with an assistant coaching role, is expected to become a full-time assistant next season.
