Miller milestone as Rangers win

Kenny Miller nabbed his 50th goal for Rangers as the defending champions kept their lead in the SPL table with a 3-1 win over St Mirren.

Having briefly dropped to second following Celtic's 9-0 obliteration of Aberdeen on Saturday, Rangers reclaimed top spot with a comprehensive victory at New St Mirren Park on Sunday.

Marc McAusland scored an own goal to give Rangers the lead three minutes into the second half, the defender heading the ball past goalkeeper Craig Samson after Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty deflected a Steve Davis cross.

Steven Naismith doubled their advantage 10 minutes later by finishing off some good work by Lafferty and Davis, who combined to cut through St Mirren's defence down the left wing before Davis crossed to Naismith for a simple tap in.

McAusland was again to blame in the 68th minute, losing control of a long ball and allowing Miller to cut in and coolly slot the visitors' third goal.

St Mirren eventually scored in the 76th minute, with substitute Michael Higdon converting from the penalty spot after Davis handled.

But it was scant consolation for the hosts, who remain firmly entrenched at the bottom of the table with eight points.

Rangers remain unbeaten after 11 games with 31 points, one point clear of Celtic and well clear of Motherwell in third on 19 points.

Meanwhile, Hearts handed Hibernian a third straight loss with a 2-0 trouncing in the Edinburgh derby at Easter Road Stadium.

Scotland Under-21 striker David Templeton opening the scoring for the visitors in the 19th minute with a brilliant solo effort, collecting the ball on the halfway line and cutting through three defenders before sliding a low strike past Hibs keeper Mark Brown.

Fellow forward Stephen Elliott, in his first start since joining Hearts from Preston North End in August, made it 2-0 on 67 minutes, striking from close range from a Templeton assist after Kevin Kyle flicked on a free kick.

And things only got worse for Hibernian, with striker Derek Riordan exiting to a straight red card in the closing minutes.

The win catapults Hearts to fourth on the table with 17 points while Hibs remain perilously close to the foot of the table, only ahead of St Mirren on goal difference.
