Sir Alex Ferguson will meet with Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill on Thursday to decide the future of unsettled striker Wayne Rooney.

The England international released a statement shortly before United's 1-0 victory over Bursaspor in the Champions League on Wednesday admitting he wants to quit Old Trafford over concerns about the future strength of the squad.

It has left manager Ferguson seething and, speaking after Nani scored the winning goal against the Turkish champions, he hinted at decisive action.

"I haven't read all the statement. But David and I will have a meeting on Thursday at 10am and we'll asses the whole situation. We don't want this carrying on," Ferguson said.

"David spoke to the owners tonight, which is important. What is really important is for us to put this to bed."

"We don't want it to become a saga. I'm a manager who wants to win a game against Stoke City on Sunday. This is a bagatelle, believe me."

"We have a massive game on Sunday and we have to concentrate on that because our supporters deserve that."

"If we continue with one player dominating headlines and dominating our thoughts we are not doing our job."

Ferguson added that he was proud of the way the club has stuck together amidst the Rooney controversy.

"It's important to win for the fans, they were good tonight and got behind the team. There was a good unity in the team, a good atmosphere in the dressing room," Ferguson said.

"We could have pushed on better, I think we did a good job in that we kept the intensity of our game right and controlled the match. I think they had one shot with just two minutes to go."

"I didn't think they could possibly have scored because defensively our concentration was good."
