Bayern Munich's horror start to the Bundesliga season continued as they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to league leaders Mainz.

The defending champions have won just two of their opening six games and are already 10 points behind undefeated Mainz, who top the table after Saturday's win.

Sami Allagui gave the visitors the perfect start at the Allianz Arena when he scored from close range after 15 minutes with a cheeky flick through his legs.

But an own goal from defender Bo Svensson on the eve of half-time brought Bayern back into the match heading into the main break.

The champions had the lion's share of possession in the second half and created plenty of chances, but couldn't break through a Mainz defence which has conceded just five goals this season.

Mainz made Bayern pay in the closing stages, Adam Szalai scoring a stunning volley with 13 minutes remaining to give the visitors their sixth straight win and maintain their unbeaten record.

Borussia Dortmund stay second after they eased past newly promoted St Pauli 3-1.

Midfielder Kevin Grosskreutz scored a goal in each half for Dortmund and Japan international Shinji Kagawa also scored for the visitors, after Rouwen Hennings netted for St Pauli in the first half to make it 1-1 at the break.

Bayer Leverkusen crushed a 10-man Stuttgart outfit 4-1 to move up to fourth on the table.

Sami Hyypia and Arturo Vidal struck within two minutes of each other before Stuttgart defender Mauro Camoranesi was shown a straight red card to give the visitors even more of an advantage.

Stuttgart were actually next to score when Zdravko Kuzmanovic found the net on 52 minutes, but goals to Hanno Balitsch and Sidney Sam in the final half-hour sealed a comfortable win for Leverkusen.

The loss leaves Stuttgart on the bottom of the table, with Schalke drawing 2-2 with Borussia Monchengladbach to lift themselves out of last place.

Steve McLaren's side had found themselves 2-0 down at half-time after goals from Filip Daems and Michael Bradley, but big money signings Jan-Klaas Huntelaar and Raul finally lived up to their price tags, scoring second-half goals to give Schalke a share of the points.

Eintracht Frankfurt won just their second game of the season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Nuremberg, Theofanis Gekas and Chris scoring the goals for the home side.

A brace from Hugo Almeida saw Werder Bremen claim a 3-2 victory over Hamburg in a northern German derby.

Thomas Schaaf's side went ahead in the 25th minute through a Guy Demel own goal before Almeida struck three minutes later to double the advantage.

But Hamburg hit back after half-time with goals through Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jonathan Pitroipa to level the scores before Almeida's strike in the 85th minute broke the deadlock.
