Lampard backs Harry

Chelsea stalwart Frank Lampard has declared Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp "the best choice" to succeed England manager Fabio Capello.

Capello is due to complete his reign at the Three Lions helm following the European Championships in 2012, and calls have already begun for a return to home-grown management.

Support for Capello has dwindled since England's disappointing World Cup campaign, with some commentators questioning the Italian's ability to communicate effectively with his squad.

Lampard, who is Redknapp's nephew, says the 63-year-old is the logical successor to Capello.

"If we're looking for a home-grown manager next, Harry's definitely the one," Lampard told The Sun.

"Harry's the best choice. For me, it's got to be him."

"Six months ago people would have said (Liverpool boss) Roy Hodgson, he was the favourite but not now."

Redknapp has taken Tottenham from strength to strength since moving to White Hart Lane in 2008.

The former Portsmouth and West Ham United boss guided Spurs to the Champions League in his first full campaign last term, with the club within reach of a knockout stages berth after beating defending champions Inter Milan 3-1 on Tuesday.

"Harry's had such a great career. Look where he's taking Tottenham right now," Lampard said.

"Who can argue with this week's performance against the European champions Inter Milan?"

"And remember what he did at Portsmouth and West Ham before that."

Redknapp has publicly declared his interest in managing England after Capello, having missed out on the role following Steve McLaren's departure.

"Obviously, I'd be very proud if he is the next England boss because of the family connection," Lampard said.
