Defeat of Excelsior on Saturday handed FC Twente their sixth win at home in succession and helped them go top of the Eredivisie.

Defender Leendert van Steensel had given the visitors a surprise early lead after just two minutes of the game, before Belgian winger Nacer Chadli equalised for the hosts on the half-hour mark.

Michel Preud'homme's side took all three points and moved to the top of the standings in Holland when Austria international Marc Janko - with his second goal in a week - netted with 15 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, Groningen beat Breda 2-1 thanks to a brace from Andreas Granqvist either side of the break.

The home side had begun the day in fourth place in the table, and consolidated their position with this victory over mid-table Breda.

An eventful day for former Wigan defender Granqvist began when he put Breda in front courtesy of an own goal, but he made amends with a brace from the penalty spot to clinch the three points for his side.

Tenth-placed Heerenveen got the better of 12th-in-the-table Heracles in a five-goal thriller.

Defender Michel Breuer gave the home side the lead on 25 minutes, before a penalty from Netherlands winger Roy Beerens just before the interval doubled their advantage.

The visitors responded after half-time, scoring twice in quick succession through a Willy Overtoom spot kick and an Everton Ramos da Silva strike.

But Birger Maertens's last-minute own goal gave the hosts all three points.
