Jamieson aims high

Sydney FC defender Scott Jamieson is confident his move to the reigning A-League champions will help him claim a regular spot in the Socceroos squad.

Casting aside the usual cliches footballer's throw out regarding representative selection, Jamieson declared he has set his sights on becoming a permanent member of the Australian side over the next few years.

The 21-year-old, who has been one of the most consistent players in the A-League over the last two season, already has two international caps to his name and made his debut in an Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia last year.

With the retirement of veteran Socceroos left-back Scott Chipperfield after the recent World Cup, there appears an opportunity for a youngster to push his claims for a spot in the squad, especially with the Asian Cup on the horizon in January next year.

While former Sydney FC star David Carney is next in line after doing a superb job against Ghana and Serbia in South Africa, Jamieson is hopeful of performing well enough for his new club this season to force his way into the Socceroos set-up.

"Making my debut was really special and it's something I definitely want to continue," Jamieson told Sportal.

"I've been around the Socceroos for the last two years, got a taste and I know the boys pretty well."

"It was a great experience and it's something I want more of for sure. There's hopefully going to be a chance for me now to add to it."

"Obviously I have to produce for Sydney first and there's still a lot to do but if I can play well there's no reason why I can't."

Jamieson, who was born and bred in Western Sydney, joins the reigning A-League champions after two successful seasons with the Reds in Adelaide.

He said the lure of more Asian Champions League football and the pedigree of coach Vitezslav Lavicka swayed him to head to the Sky Blues.

"(Sydney's) the biggest club in the A-League and there's always a lot of pressure which is quite good....I thrive on that," Jamieson, the 2009 A-League Young Player of the Year, said.

"The fans are expecting us to win again, it's going to be difficult but we've got a good squad and the manager is brilliant."

"To learn under Vite and Poppa (assistant coach Tony Popovic) is only going to develop my game even more."

Which has become evident in his early stages in the harbour city with Jamieson, who has made his name as a left back in the last few seasons, playing in a more advanced role at Sydney with South Korean Sung-Hwan Byun ensconced in the fullback position.

"I'm enjoying it....it gives me a bit more freedom to get forward and adds a new string to my bow," Jamieson said of playing on the left-hand side of midfield.

"I played a lot of midfield as a junior, I even went to Bolton as a midfielder so it's not something that's totally new to me."

"But I like the challenge to get forward. I haven't got a goal yet (in the A-league) and I need to get the monkey off my back."

"I had an excuse when I was playing at the back but now I have to start getting a few goals."

And Jamieson is still waiting for his first goal after strikers Alex Brosque and Mark Bridge scored in the Sky Blues' 2-2 pre-season draw with the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night.

Sydney FC next takes on international clubs Blackburn Rovers, Rangers and AEK Athens in a four-team tournament at the SFS starting on July 25.
