The Queensland Rugby Union is one of many creditors allegedly owed money by Brisbane Roar and on Friday it lodged an application to have the financially-stricken A-League club wound up.
The QRU filed documents with the Queensland Supreme Court last Friday outlining almost 12 months of outstanding rent payments at the Roar’s former training venue at Ballymore.
The application gives The Bakrie Group, the owners of the three-time A-League champions, until August 19 to clear their debt or face the prospect of having the Roar wound up.
QRU chief executive Jim Carmichael has written to his Football Federation Australia counterpart David Gallop requesting the governing body to intervene.
“It is disappointing that, not for the first time, the QRU is owed money by Brisbane Roar.”
“Maybe the FFA need to examine the ownership model of their A-League franchises and now provide some level of comfort to organisations who have supported this franchise over a number of years,” Carmichael said.
Roar chairman Chris Fong has stated over a fortnight ago that the A-League club would be sold and a positive outcome may be announced within days.
There has been some sceptimism surrounding the buyout reports but Fong maintains the new buyer would see “all creditors paid and stability restored”.
