A Samuel Eto'o hat-trick and Barcelona's draw in Russia were highlights of the second half of Champions League matchday two.

Cameroon striker Eto'o scored a treble as Inter Milan romped to a 4-0 win at home against German's Werder Bremen in Group A, while the Spanish champions were held to a shock 1-1 draw with Rubin Kazan.

The defending European champions were in ominous form in Milan, with Eto'o opening up the Bremen defence after 21 minutes before doubling the home side's advantage six minutes later.

Dutch midfielder Wesley Schneider got in on the act next, with his 34th-minute strike ensuring Inter were more than comfortable at the break.

With the game sewn up, the Italians could afford to take their foot off the pedal in the second period.

But Eto'o still managed to complete his hat-trick late on, rounding the keeper for a simple tap in.

Inter now top the standings in Group A ahead of Tottenham, who notched their first Champions League victory with a 4-1 win over FC Twente.

Rafael Van der Vaart opened the scoring just after half-time, before Roman Pavlyuchenko scored a brace of penalties and Gareth Bale nabbed a late sealer to overshadow Nacer Chadli's second-half strike for the Dutch champions.

Group D delivered the shock of the day, with Russian champions Rubin Kazan holding Spanish giants Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in Russia.

In a match where there were few chances, a penalty kick was the only way each side could break the deadlock.

Christian Noboa gave the hosts the lead on the half-hour mark after Vitali Kaleshin was brought down by Daniel Alves, but David Villa equalised from the spot in the 60th minute when Andres Iniesta was felled in the box by Lasha Salukvadze.

Neither side could find a win in the closing stages despite several chances, as Rubin continued their unbeaten record against the Spanish champions.

Copenhagen won Group D's other fixture on Wednesday, with first-half goals from Dame Ndoye and Martin Vingaard enough for a 2-0 win over Panathinaikos in Greece.

In Group C, a late goal from Javier Hernandez gave Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Valencia in Spain.

Valencia currently lead La Liga and would have been confident of victory at the Mestalla, but couldn't break down a United defence which welcomed back England international Rio Ferdinand.

The match looked destined for a draw until Hernandez bobbed up in the 85th minute to nail the winner and give United their first victory of the campaign.

Scottish giants Rangers were also on the winners list, with a Steve Naismith strike on 18 minutes giving them a 1-0 victory over Bursaspor at Ibrox.

In Group B, Lyon won 3-1 away at Hapoel Tel Aviv, with Michel Fernandes Bastos scoring a first-half double, while German side Schalke continued their revival with a 2-0 win at home against Benfica.
