Hooper rescues Hoops

An injury-time winner from Gary Hooper gave Celtic a crucial 1-0 win at St Mirren on Monday.

There was little action in the first half at New St Mirren Park, but it was the home side who began the brighter after the interval.

They were unlucky not to take the lead on 52 minutes when Michael Higdon hit the crossbar with a 35-yard volley.

Hooper could have scored far earlier than he did, but the ex-Scunthorpe United forward saw his close-range header saved by Craig Samson when he seemed destined to find the net after an hour.

However, the home team also had chances to break the deadlock, with keeper Fraser Forster reacting well to turn Gareth Wardlaw's fierce drive over the bar.

And, as time slowly ticked away towards the full time whistle, it appeared as though St Mirren had done enough to earn a point, until Hooper found himself in the right place at the right time.

He got on the end of Paddy McCourt's clever pull-back to hand the visitors all three points and return them to within a point of arch-rivals Rangers at the top of the table.
