Hercules rose to the challenge again to defeat Sevilla 2-0 - their second scalp of the La Liga season - courtesy of a David Trezeguet brace.

The former France and Juventus forward netted his first double for the newly promoted club on Sunday, which has also beaten Barcelona at the Nou Camp this season.

Debutant Alvaro Vazquez was the hero for Espanyol as they entered the top six on the table with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Osasuna at Cornella.

Vazquez's goal came four minutes after the visitors' Lolo was sent from the field in the 21st minute.

A Fernando Cavenaghi brace ensured promoted Real Sociedad lost their third match in a row, as his Real Mallorca side cruised to a 2-0 victory.

After Thursday's home defeat to Malaga, Getafe bounced back with a 1-0 win over Racing Santander.

Victor Sanchez's 16th-minute strike saw off 10-man Racing, who lost Markus Rosenberg to a red card.

Lau Uche scored twice in the opening 20 minutes to hand Almeria a 2-0 win against Deportivo La Coruna.

Deportivo's centre-back Diego Colotto received a straight red card just before half-time to give his side little hope of a comeback.

Atletico Madrid - also reduced to 10 men - held off Real Zaragoza at the Vicente Calderon, courtesy of Diego Costa's 20th minute strike.

Jose Antonio Reyes was sent from the field with 30 minutes remaining, but the hosts held on to secure all three points.
