Herbert proud of fight

Wellington Phoenix manager Ricki Herbert spoke of his players' 'responsibility' for the shirt after their resounding second half saw them snatch a point against finals-bound Melbourne Heart.

The draw keeps Phoenix in third and on track for a home final with two games to play, but looked unlikely after a lacklustre first-half and one-goal deficit flattered Herbert's men.

A wonder strike from Paul Ifill with 10 minutes to play capped off a stunning turnaround for the Phoenix after they had been comprehensively outplayed by the Heart at AAMI Park.

"I think we were pretty poor in the first half, collectively we'll accept that," Herbert said.

"But this is a team that works bloody hard together and I didn't think that (first half) resembled it, for whatever reason."

"For me it's about that responsibility on the pitch. The Wellington Phoenix resembles a lot for us."

"It's not about getting beaten in a football match it's about the quality and making sure we're delivering at the best level we can, I think that probably hit a few notes (at half time) and they responded well which was good."

"I thought the second half was very, very good. It's probably at the level that we need to be at if we're going to be competitive in the finals."

The win boosts Wellington's hopes of a home final, with a win against Melbourne Victory next week guaranteeing that right.

Herbert revealed his side now has their sights firmly on that goal and said he wouldn't mind proving doubters wrong in the process.

"If you do your stats the averages are pretty high if you're playing at home (in the finals) so it think we're all chasing that, we'd all love that, for our fans it would be huge this year because I think there was an air of unexpectation that we wouldn't do anything this year."

"It's about extracting the best out of what you've got and we've got some extremely good players at the club who have been really resilient through some tough times and that's what I liked in the second half tonight."

Goal scorer Ifill admitted the players set aside a couple of minutes to regroup before the second half as they earmarked the period as a defining moment in the season.

"We just said: 'this is not good enough if we really want to have a go at it this year we need to pull our socks up a little bit'," Ifill said.

"I'm glad we did I still don't think we were great in the second half but again we dug in, pleased to get a point, don't think we deserved a win in the end," he said.
