Guangzhou show takes the cake

Cannavaro Lippi

Cannavaro was officially announced as Marcello Lipp’s replacement on Wednesday, the Italian World Cup-winning captain taking over at the Chinese club from the coach who led the Azzurri to glory in Germany during 2006.

Not content to deliver a run-of-the-mill press release, Guangzhou took to twitter with this epic photo reminiscent of a Chinese martial arts action thriller.

Guangzhou’s efforts were reminiscent of a few other awesome coaching announcements over the years.

Collingwood – Mick Malthouse 1999

Having won the wooden spoon in 1999, Collingwood looked to embark on a brand new era following the Tony Shaw period, with West Coast premiership coach tempted to head east to take up the Magpies’ role.

Confirming the news – one of the AFL’s worst-kept secrets – was probably big enough but Collingwood president Eddie McGuire had to throw some cars into the mix, Malthouse unveiled in Volvo convertible for no apparent reason.

Newcastle United – Kevin Keegan 2008

King Kev was brought back to Tyneside for a third spell as manager in style during early 2008 when he rocked up at the ground via helicopter in January of that year.

Fast forward eight months and Keegan was sensationally sacked by owner Mike Ashley following a showdown over the club’s transfer policy.

Fremantle – Ross Lyon 2011

One of the most clandestine deals in the game’s history was unveiled in September 2011 when Mark Harvey was sacked by the Dockers and sensationally replaced by St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

There weren’t too many bells and whistles for this press conference but it was noteworthy simply for the way Lyon batted away every nasty question from the Perth media – most of them pro-Harvey – with aplomb.
