Football Federation Australia will make a major announcement on Wednesday afternoon, with chairman Frank Lowy expected to name the new Socceroos coach.

Australia has been without a coach since Pim Verbeek moved on following the World Cup finals in South Africa in June, with FFA technical director Han Berger in charge for Thursday morning's friendly against Slovenia in Ljubljana.

FFA confirmed on Wednesday morning that Lowy will appear via video conference from Ljubljana to make the announcement at 4pm AEST ahead of the Socceroos' first outing since they ended their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Serbia in June.

With speculation in recent days that the new coach would be present for the match against Slovenia, Verbeek's successor is expected to have taken charge in time for upcoming friendlies next month against Switzerland (September 3) and Poland (September 7).

A host of managers have been linked to the Australia job since Verbeek confirmed he would be moving on including Frenchman Paul Le Guen, Irishman Martin O'Neill, Dutchman Ronald Koeman and Argentine Jose Pekerman.

A former assistant at international level with the Netherlands, Koeman has reportedly contacted FFA through his management to express an interest while O'Neill is now available after quitting his Aston Villa post on Monday just days before the start of the English Premier League season.

Former Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar, who represented the Socceroos during his playing days, quit his A-League post during the recent off-season when he was appointed as an assistant coach by FFA.
