Fergie's week ends on high

A late winner away at Stoke City was the perfect tonic for Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of a challenging week.

Ferguson has endured one of the most tumultuous periods in United's recent history after star striker Wayne Rooney shocked the football world by going public with his intention to leave the club, only to sign a new five-year deal on Friday.

On the field, United have been struggling for form and looked set for another draw in the Premier League on Sunday when Sanli Tuncay scored to make it 1-1 at the Britannia Stadium with nine minutes to play.

But in typical United fashion, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez struck in the 86th minute to secure a much-needed win.

"When their goal went in you start to say to yourself it is going to be one of those seasons, but Chicharito (Hernandez) came up with the winner," Ferguson said.

"The supporters' reaction was fantastic to the goal and our players' reaction was fantastic. It is the kind of goal United score over the years."

"Hopefully we can now kick on. We have some important games between now and Christmas time and we have to make our mark in the league now."

Ferguson also issued a thinly-veiled swipe at Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, who is believed by some to be the reason behind the 25-year-old's recent unrest.

"It is always tough at United," Ferguson added.

"There are always issues to deal with. When your top players come towards the end of their contracts you have to do something to get them a new one."

"They are all the same. You have to deal with agents of this world today, which is difficult."

"The players are no problem. There is no problem with players. Some agents are difficult."

United's Mexican match-winner was thrilled to secure three points against a notoriously physical Stoke team.

"We were very happy with the result. We know about Stoke's style and are delighted," Hernandez said.

"I'm working a lot because I want to stay here a long time and win a lot of tournaments."

"Here there are no heroes, it is about the team."

"My team-mates trust in me and all the staff too. It's an unbelievable opportunity for me to play with the biggest team in the world."
