FC United keep Cup dream alive

FC United of Manchester extended their dream FA Cup run with a 1-1 draw at Brighton, while Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton both won.

Brighton share top spot in League One, the third tier in English football, but were stunned by their non-league opponents who, after a first-round win at Rochdale, once again performed well away from home.

Nicky Platt put the visitors ahead after 40 minutes and their dream of facing Manchester United - the team their fans turned away from to start their own fan-run club - was alive.

But former Tottenham defender and Brighton's assistant manager Mauricio Taricco gave Gus Poyet's side a late equaliser with seven minutes remaining to ensure a replay between the sides.

Of the other big sides in action on Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton were both victorious while Charlton gave away a late equaliser to Conference National side Luton Town in a 2-2 draw.

Wednesday were lifted by the news that former Portsmouth and Leicester owner Milan Mandaric was set to buy the club and started strongly with defender Mark Beevers scoring a sixth-minute opener.

Tommy Miller struck two penalties either side of a Billy McKay strike for Northampton to give Wednesday a two-goal advantage and despite Kevin Thornton's injury time goal, the Yorkshire side held on for a 3-2 win.

Goals to Adam Lallana, Guilherme and Oscar Gobern saw Southampton coast to an easy 3-0 home win over Cheltenham Town, while an Andrew Drury double ruined Charlton Athletic's afternoon.

Huddersfield Town were the biggest scorers of the day, thumping League Two side Macclesfield Town 6-0.

In other matches, AFC Wimbledon's Cup dream is over after they were 2-0 losers at home to Stevenage while Carlisle United came from 2-1 down to defeat Tamworth 3-2.

Other winners were Burton Albion, Peterborough United, Torquay United, Wycombe Wanderers, Colchester United, York City and Dover Athletic, while Hereford United and Lincoln City will play a replay after the sides could not be separated in a 2-2 draw.

The all-League One clashes between Notts County and Bournemouth and Hartlepool United and Yeovil Town were both postponed due to bad weather.
