Eredivisie Preview: PSV eye title-clinching victory

PSVEindhoven - Cropped

PSV Eindhoven can wrap up the Eredivisie title on Saturday against Heerenveen, with second-placed Ajax hoping Phillip Cocu's side will slip up to keep them in the hunt.

Ajax won 2-0 at Heracles last week to ensure the championship race would continue into the final month of the 2014-15 Eredivisie season but with four games to go, the Amsterdam-based club need PSV to do them a favour if they are to defend their title.

PSV lead Ajax by 10 points and Frank de Boer's men must reduce the margin to less than nine by the end of this weekend or watch Cocu's team lift the trophy.

If PSV win in front of their home fans against Heerenveen, Ajax's game against NAC Breda on Sunday will mean nothing.

The likelihood that Ajax will miss out fifth consecutive Eredivisie crown has led to plenty of finger-pointing at the Amsterdam Arena, with De Boer claiming De Toekomst - the club's famous academy - is not producing good enough talent.

It is expected that Ajax icon Johan Cruyff will return to Amsterdam at the end of the month to discuss future plans.

"Priority is to eliminate tensions. And secondly, the football, because that is worrying," Cruyff's confidant and former Ajax defender Keje Molenaar told Algemeen Dagblad.

"Ajax should again ensure that the stands come full. There must also be done. That will also be discussed."

Third-placed Feyenoord (58 points) still hold out hope of reeling in Ajax (66) and claiming a spot in the qualifying rounds of next season's UEFA Champions League, with the Rotterdam-based club taking on Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday.

That match will be overshadowed by a racism saga regarding Eagles left-back Giliano Wijnaldum, who was attacked - both verbally and physically - after last week's 3-1 loss to Twente.

But while the Dutch Football Association requested more information regarding the incident on Tuesday, Wijnaldum has decided to move on.

"We leave it entirely up to him and support him 1,000 per cent in his decision," Eagles chairman Edwin Lugt said.

"Giliano would now like to again focus on football and is 100 per cent committed to [avoiding relegation]. We stand firmly behind him."

Go Ahead Eagles sit 17th in the Eredivisie standings with 23 points, five adrift of safety after seven straight defeats.

Round 31 will begin on Friday with Cambuur hosting Excelsior, while on Saturday, AZ face ADO Den Haag, bottom club Dordrecht visit Vitesse and Willem II take on Groningen.

Heracles host PEC Zwolle on Sunday, while Utrecht and Twente will end the round on Monday.
