Goalkeepers

Chelsea goalkeepers Thibaut Courtois (£8.4m) and Petr Cech (£8.2m) are the most expensive in the game.

Cech led the competition for clean sheets along with Wojciech Szczesny last season but with the Chelsea keepers set to battle it out for the number one jersey, Szczesny at £7.35m may be the safer option.

If you are looking for a bit more value for money then QPR’s Julio Cesar at a measly £3.9m is an absolute steal.

Harry Redknapp has spent a lot of money building a formidable centre-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker that should help Cesar rack up the points.

Defenders

Picking defenders is a balance between those that score goals and those that play for teams that don’t concede many.

Combine the two and you have hit the jackpot.

Leighton Baines is usually one of the first names on the fantasy team sheet, but at £9.4m there are certainly some options that are better value for money.

Luke Shaw for £6.27m is a good shout; Louis van Gaal will play an attacking formation and Shaw is likely to be deployed as a wing back in a 3-5-2 system giving him more opportunities to attack.

But you may have to wait until the former Southampton player returns from a month-long injury lay off.

Liverpool’s new boy Javier Manquillo is likely to come straight into a new-look Reds backline.

At £5.74m he could be the cheapest member of a strong defensive unit.

Midfielders

Aaron Ramsey (£13.98m) and Yaya Toure (£13.35m) scored more points per game than any other player in the league last season, but with Toure off to the African Cup of Nations and Aaron Ramsey unable to stay fit there are safer options floating around.

Juan Mata for £8.27m is going to be one of the players to really benefit from Louis Van Gaal’s reign at Old Trafford.

He will be playing behind the strikers in his preferred central attacking midfield position.

In the last 8 games of last season Raheem Sterling was arguably the best player in the league, if he can continue that form he will be worth a lot more than £7.97m.

If you are looking for a value option then Newcastle’s new signing Remy Cabella for £4.39m is the man for you.

Nobody, not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic, received more ‘Man of the Match’ awards than Cabella in Ligue 1 last season.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (£12.6m), Wayne Rooney (£11.8m) and Daniel Sturridge (£11.8m) are the most expensive strikers in the game, but we suggest aiming at the level just below.

Diego Costa scored 27 in 34 starts for Atletico Madrid last season, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi scored more.

He contributed 35% of their goals in Atletico’s title winning season and if pre-season form is anything to go by then he is a bargain at £9.42m.

At £9.47m Robin van Persie could also provide great value.

Van Gaal knows how to get the best out of him having coached him for Holland and no European football could mean that he stays fit all season.

If you are looking for a cheapie, then Man City’s Stevan Jovetic for £5.03m could be your man.

He has been banging in the goals in pre-season and with Aguero and Alvaro Negredo out of action he will start the season in the side.
