Donald Trump denies he wants to buy Pope's favourite team

United States presidential candidate Donald Trump has dismissed claims he is trying to buy the Pope's favourite club, San Lorenzo.

The New York Post had reported the Republican frontrunner and his business partner Alessandro Proto had already made contact with the Argentine outfit about acquiring the 2014 Copa Libertadores winners.

However, Trump promptly took to Twitter to insist there is absolutely no truth in the report that he wants to own the club, which has the support of the head of Catholicism in Pope Francis.

"A phony story that I am trying to buy a soccer team in Argentina is untrue," he wrote. "Never even heard of the team - no interest!"

Trump, who is hoping to secure the Republic nomination for the 2016 presidential vote, previously tried to acquire Colombian club Atletico Nacional but his offer of $100 million (€89.4m) was rejected.

The real estate mogul has hit the headlines in contentious circumstances in recent weeks. He accused Mexico of "sending drugs and rapists" to the US and suggested Fox News host Megyn Kelly had "blood coming out of her wherever" during a televised debate.
