Comment: FFA must explain Petkovic disallowed goal

Only 12 days ago, A-League chief Damien De Bohun took the unprecedented step of clarifying the match review panel's decision to uphold a controversial red card - incidentally with Petkovic again involved in a disputed referee's call during an FFA Cup match against Adelaide United.

De Bohun's explanation was concise and completely cleared up a grey area that was not understood by a lot of supporters.

Milliner's decision to chalk off Petkovic's free kick was confusing and needs to be dealt with the same courtesy.

Who is to say that the Sky Blues wouldn't have parked the bus and held out for a huge three points at Coopers Stadium?

I must stress that we aren't 100 percent sure that Milliner bottled the decison - there is evidence pointing in that direction - but there needs to be an explanation.

It was clear after the incident and the game that the Sydney FC felt they had been wronged by Milliner's call.

The decision made after the ball crossed the line was that the Sydney players had not waited for the referee to allow the free kick to be taken - signalled by a whistle blow.

What was puzzling is that Milliner turned and watched the free kick sail into the net before then disallowing the goal.

Why didn't he blow his whistle straight away as soon as the free kick was struck?

Was he planning on play continuing if Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic saved or the ball sailed over the bar?

It was rightly pointed out to me by a friend during the game that a free kick should be an advantage to the team it was awarded to.

Therefore, if Milliner didn't explicitly ask Petkovic to wait for the wall to be set, the goal 100 percent should stand.

It is ridiculous to ask the referees and the FFA to explain every controversial decision made - De Bohun wouldn't have time to continue the quality job he is doing running the league.

But this is confusion about the application of a rule that players, coaches and supporters are unsure about it.

Over to you Damien.
