Andy Carroll, Chris Smalling, Jay Bothroyd and Jordan Henderson are all new faces in Fabio Capello's England squad, named on Sunday.

The Italian boss named the quartet as part of a 23-man squad to face France at Wembley on Wednesday in a friendly.

Carroll's selection is no surprise after he netting seven goals in 13 matches on his way to topping the English Premier League goalscoring charts.

He has been influential in newly promoted Newcastle's successful start to the season and wins his first call-up at the age of 21.

"He is a young player who we have wanted to make very good progress - he has done exactly that. He has added goals to his game," Carroll's club boss Chris Hughton said.

"He is very different to most other strikers and he couldn't have done any more this season to stake a claim (for England)."Fulham boss Mark Hughes - who witnessed firsthand Carroll's ability on Saturday - also believes the towering striker can make a impact at international level.

"He will certainly make an impression. Whether or not he would be able to go straight in and cement a place long-term, that's a different debate," Hughes said.

"He's a difficult player to deal with and if he gets the right service, which on occasions he has had this season, then he's a real threat and you have to acknowledge that."

Smalling and Henderson, both 20, have impressed for Manchester United and Sunderland respectively, with midfielder Henderson tipped to be a star of England's future.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has publicly admitted he may be hard to keep hold of in January's transfer window, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City said to hold interest in the winger.

Bothroyd, 28, has scored 15 goals in 16 matches in all competitions for Championship side Cardiff City and becomes the first-ever player from the Welsh club to be called up for England.

Manchester City full-back Micah Richards and Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs have also been included.

Missing through injury are Liverpool due Joe Cole and Glen Johnson, while Bolton captain Kevin Davies is a surprise omission.

Davies made his international debut against Montenegro in October and was watched by Capello when he bagged a double against in-form Tottenham last weekend.
