Cagliari President Massimo Cellino has denied the club's fans racially abused Inter Milan's Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o.

Inter's match at Cagliari on Sunday was stopped for about three minutes in the early stages after chants from Cagliari supporters prompted officials to intervene.

Referee Paolo Tagliavento approached both benches before an announcement was made over the public address system asking supporters to stop the chants.

Eto'o went on to score the game's only goal as Inter secured a hard-fought victory to move equal top of the Serie A table with AC Milan.

Cellino has denied the claims of abuse and said his club's supporters are not racist.

"I didn't hear any such chants. I absolutely did not hear them," said Cellino.

"At Cagliari we have never been racist. I think there must have been a mistake."

Cellino questioned the endeavour of his own players, claiming paying supporters had the right to feel aggrieved by the side's performance.

"Perhaps Cagliari even deserved to win considering the number of chances, but if I had paid my ticket today then I'd have asked for a refund," he said.

"There was no verve and I'd never want to see a game like that again. The players lacked the right determination."

"I had no problem with Pierpaolo Bisoli's tactics and it wasn't his fault. We still have some issues finding our grit."
