Police have confirmed that a man is in custody in connection with alleged sexual activity with a minor, amid reports that an England international footballer has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Reports emerged in the British media on Monday of the arrest, with Durham Constabulary confirming in a statement that an individual is being held.
"A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16," read the statement.
"He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries."
