Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said his job was safe, despite four defeats in his first 12 Premier League matches in charge.

The latest was the 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

But the Portuguese says he has the backing of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich as the pair look to the long term.

"I don't think it's a question of the owner having patience," Villas-Boas said.

"We have set out to build something new at this club and the club is committed to what we are setting out to build in the future."

"The owner didn't pay 15 million pounds to get me out of Porto to pay me another fortune to get me out."

"Our commitment is towards the club and what we are doing in the future and we have enough talent to compete in all competitions and that's the perspective we take at the moment."

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish also gave his support, saying anyone operating inside football will be aware of Villas-Boas's potential.

"The only people questioning him will be journalists," Dalglish said.

"I don't think there will be anyone in the football profession who will be."

"I don't know the lad but he had a fantastic CV at Porto and he brings that here. I don't know what the criticism will be but it won't come from the football community."

The 2-1 defeat to Liverpool leaves Chelsea 12 points behind leaders Manchester City and the 34-year-old admits it will be tough to recapture the Premier League title.

"I think it will be difficult to recover 12 points, of course. We know that the last 12 points recovery was a long time ago in December but that doesn't mean we don't have the belief that we can get the title back but it makes things more difficult."

Liverpool's victory at Stamford Bridge means they are now level with Chelsea on 22 points.

On Sunday, they'll attempt to become the first team this season to beat Manchester City in the league.

" As I've said many times before we'll just go out and play the game and add up the points and see where we are," Dalglish said.

"But there is a lot of competition in the Premier League at the moment as there is every year. So it's not easy to collect the points but we'll do the best we can."

After Sunday's game against City, Dalglish's side return to London to play Chelsea again, this time in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.
