The Socceroos captain was up to his usual tricks, making the most tackles of any player in England's top flight on Saturday.

Newcomer Jason Davidson was an unused substitute for West Bromwich Albion as they drew 2-2 at home to Sunderland, while Brad Jones also remained on the bench as Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-1 at home.

In the Championship, Scott McDonald started and finished the game as Millwall won 1-0 away to Fulham.

Adam Federici kept a clean sheet and Ryan Edwards came on in the 67th minute for Reading, as they defeated Ipswich Town 1-0 at home.

In League One, Massimo Luongo started and finished the game for Swindon Town, who had a man sent off and lost 1-0 away to Crawley Town.

Neil Kilkenny played the full game and Bailey Wright started before coming off just after the hour mark as their Preston North End side thumped Scunthorpe United 4-0 on the road.

Europe

Mitch Langerak was denied a clean sheet for Borussia Dortmund as they cruised to a 4-1 away win over Stuttgarter Kickers in the DFB Pokal. 

Mat Ryan's Club Brugge were frustrated, drawing 1-1 with local rivals Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League.

Luke Wilkshire played the full game for Feyenoord in a 1-1 Eredivisie draw at home to Heerenveen. Adam Sarota watched from the bench as Utrecht defeated 2-1 at home.

Josh Brillante came on for the final 20 minutes of Fiorentina's 2-1 friendly win over Real Madrid.

In Portugal, former Melbourne Victory player Adama Traore completed 90 minutes on his Liga Sagres debut for Vitoria Guimaraes in a 3-1 win away to Gil Vicente, who had Caleb Patterson-Sewell on the bench.

James Holland played a full game but Austria Wien's slow start to the season continued, as they drew 1-1 away to Sturm Graz.

Dario Vidosic started but was subbed off on 65 minutes of FC Sion's 3-2 loss at home to Basel in the Swiss Super League.

Asia

Ryan McGowan, who played a full game for Shandong Luneng, endured a day to forget in the Chinese Super League, going down 4-1 away to Hangzhou Greentown.

Adam Hughes was also on a losing team, his Harbin Yiteng beaten 1-0 at home to Shanghai Shenxin.

In the K-League, Aleksandar Jovanovic helped Jeju United keep a clean sheet and record a 1-0 win at home to Ulsan Hyundai. Alex Wilkinson also fared well, his Jeonbuk Motors winning 2-0 at Pohang Steelers.
