Aussies Abroad: Goals galore for Socceroos

Tim Cahill, Mile Jedinak, Bailey Wright, Ryan McGowan and James Troisi all found the back of the net in a remarkably successful weekend - and one which surely must've pleased Socceroo boss Ange Postecoglou.

Cahill came off the bench just before the hour mark and took just seven minutes to get his name on the scoresheet in the New York Red Bulls’ 4-1 demolition of the Seattle Sounders.

The Socceroos’ greatest-ever goal-scorer pounced on a mistake from Djimi Traore, working the ball onto his left foot and getting off a pin-point low shot which bounced in off the post.

It was Cahill’s second goal of the MLS season and is sure to help get the veteran attacker back into the Red Bulls starting side as the season edges towards the play-offs.

He wasn’t the only Socceroo star to find the back of the net over the weekend, with skipper Mile Jedinak helping Crustal Palace to their first win over the season with a 3-2 upset win away to Cahill's former club Everton.

After going a goal down early, Jedinak dragged Palace back into the contest, coolly converting from the spot.

Wright also showed his goal-scoring prowess, getting the opener in Preston North End’s 2-0 win over Crawley Town.

The defender, who scored on his Socceroos debut against Saudi Arabia earlier this month, showed the finishing prowess of a striker when he clinically tucked home Calum Woods’ cross midway through the first half.

It was a similar story for Ryan McGowan who sent Shandong Luneng of their way to victory with a sixth-minute opener in the 3-1 away win over Dàlián Ā’ěrbīn.

In his second game for new club Zulte-Waregem, James Troisi was on the scoresheet 10 minutes into the second half of their 2-1 defeat to Sporting Charleroi to keep the side second from bottom in the league.

Elsewhere, Mathew Leckie was again in good form as his FC Ingolstadt side drew 1-1 away to 1860 Munich in Bundesliga II but the match will be remembered for the home side’s interesting playing strip.

With Oktoberfest kicking off in Germany over the weekend, 1860 wore a special kit, complete with sky blue stitching on traditional-looking lederhosen.

Tommy Oar continued his superb form in the Eredivisie, setting up FC Utrecht’s winner as they knocked off Groningen 1-0, while Luke Wilkshire also played 90 in Feyenoord’s defeat to Ajax by the same score.

Maty Ryan’s Club Brugge had a comfortable night, crushing KV Kortrijk 5-0.

In English League One, Brad Smith played a full game and had an assist as Swindon Town moved up to fourth with a 5-2 win over Sheffield United.

Massimo Luongo also started and got through 73 minutes for the hosts, while in Scotland Jackson Irvine played a full match for Ross County who went down 3-0 to Aberdeen.
