AEL claimed a shock 2-1 victory over Belgian giants Anderlecht in an intriguing Champions League play-off in Nicosia.

The Cypriot side, attempting to emulate APOEL Nicosia's feats last season, took a deserved advantage thanks to Rui Miguel's late winner.

Dosa Junior headed AEL into a 34th-minute lead in the first leg encounter at the GSP Stadium before Dieudonne Mbokani fired home in the 62nd minute to equalise for Anderlecht.

Ten minutes later Edmar negotiated his way past the back four, laying off to Rui Miguel, whose angled shot hit the post and slowly creeped past the goalkeeper, despite getting a hand to it.

Anderlecht's hopes of an equaliser were soon dented when Milan Jovanovic was sent off for a second yellow.

Anderlecht, who suffered their first defeat in six matches, will hope to rectify the problem in the return leg in Belgium next Wednesday.

The hosts dominated from the off, and took the lead on 17 minutes through Argentine Martin Demichelis, who provided the decisive touch to Joaquin's free-kick.

In the 34th minute the Greek side were again punished by a slick one-two from Enzo Maresca and Isco before picking out Eliseu to crisply volley home the second.
