Star duo fit for Germany

Star duo fit to take on Germany

06/10/2010 07:53:12 PM

It's the news every Socceroos fan wants to hear - superstars Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill have declared themselves fit and ready to go just three days out from Australia's opening World Cup game against Germany in Durban on Sunday.

The pair, along with Australia's other injury concern, veteran midfielder Brett Emerton, all joined in full training at the Socceroos' Johannesburg base in cold conditions on Thursday night (South African time) with Kewell and Cahill saying they were ready to play.

Cahill, whose fantastic record of 20 goals from just 40 caps makes him Australia's most important player and the most likely source of goals against the hard-nosed German defence, threw a scare into the camp when he pulled up sore with a neck injury following last Saturday's 3-1 loss to the United States in Australia's final warm-up match.

The Everton star missed training on Tuesday night but looked sharp on Thursday night, saying there was no doubt about his availability to face Germany.

"If the game was tomorrow I would play," he said.

Kewell, who has not played a full game even at club level this year because of a groin injury and who missed all three of Australia's warm-up matches against New Zealand, Denmark and the USA, also said he was raring to go.

"I am fine, I have been working hard with the team and everything seems to be going well," he said.

"Hopefully I have (timed my run to perfection)."

Kewell also said he was capable of playing the full 90 minutes in Durban on Sunday - even in the lone striker role - if asked to by coach Pim Verbeek.

"Every single player is up for 180 minutes," he replied when asked by Sportal if he was capable of lasting the full 90 minutes against Germany.

However Kewell is not certain whether Verbeek will elect to start with him in the lone striker role or instead use him off the bench, which in that case would mean the towering Josh Kennedy would play up front on his own.

When asked if he would be in the starting line-up on Sunday; Kewell replied: "I don't know, you better ask the trainer (coach Verbeek)."

Kewell said every position in the starting line-up was still up for grabs as far as he concerned.

"We are still fighting for our positions and we are still working hard towards the (Germany) game," he said.

"We are sharp, we are fit, we are strong and we are up for this."

"We have come a long way because this time we have gone the route of qualifying properly (through Asia for the first time) which has been fantastic."

"So the players have done the hard work and now this is kind of the fun part now to go out there and show the world what we are capable of doing."

That's great news, I think Harry coming off the bench for half an hour will be even more benificial for us. We need to concentrate against Germany on keeping the scores level more than anything and if we can do that then Harry coming on for the last half an hour could be just the tonic we need. I think playing him for the full 90 or even 60 would be wrong. We'll need him more for the Ghana/Serbia matches where we'll be looking to take them on a little bit more.
